Democrats will maintain their narrow Pennsylvania House majority after winning a special election in the Philadelphia suburbs. Heather Boyd defeated Republican Katie Ford. Boyd’s win gives Democrats 102 representatives, the minimum needed to control the agenda in the 203-seat House.

Democrat Dan McCaffery and Republican Carolyn Carluccio have won their parties’ primaries for a vacant seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. The two will face each other in a fall contest for the court.


In the race for Lackawanna County Commissioner new faces have emerged. Heading on to the general election in November are Democrats Bill Gaughan and Matt McGloin and Republican incumbent Commissioner Chris Chermak and Diana Campbell.   The four will now vie for seats on the three member council.  Incumbent Democrat Jerry Notarianni was unsuccessful in his try for a third term and Democratic Commissioner Debi Domenick did not seek re-election.

In the race for Scranton School Board, there will be 6 candidates vying for the 6 open spots for four year terms come November. Unofficial results found Robert Casey, Marie Merkel, Catherine Fox and Tom Borthwick winning on both the Democrat and Republican tickets. On the Democrat ballot it was Tara Yanni and on the Republican side Mark Dennenbaum. Fox and Yanni and the only incumbents on the Board to run in the fall.

In the city of Carbondale, Michele Bannon won the Democratic nomination over Maria Lawler for Mayor. Current Mayor Justin Taylor did not seek re election for a 6th term. So far there is no Republican opposition for November but write in votes have not yet been counted.

In the race for Luzerne County Council, unofficial results show 12 nominees will square off in November for voters to pick 6. Republicans include Thomas Dombroski, Harry Haas, LeeAnn Mc Dermott, Matthew Mitchell, Stephen J Urban and Kimberly Platek. Democrats, Joanna Bryn Smith, Patricia Krushnowski, Michelle Rothenbecker, Jimmy Sabatino, Brittany Stephenson and Maryanne Velez.

In the city of Wilkes Barre, unofficial results showed Tony Thomas coming out on top over two term incumbent Darren Snyder for Democratic nomination for City Controller
