With a potential strike looming, registered nurses at Geisinger Wyoming Valley assembled Wednesday on Public Square for a rally that union officials called “a last ditch effort” to reach a new agreement with the health care system. According to reports, negotiations with Geisinger began in November of last year. When the contract covering 800 RNs at Geisinger expired Jan. 31, union members voted to reject the hospital’s latest proposals, which nurses at the rally claimed failed to adequately address staffing shortages, rising health care costs, lack of competitive pay and violence in the workplace. Earlier in the month, the union voted to authorize a strike if necessary. Two more bargaining sessions are scheduled for today and Tuesday Feb. 11. According to a press release, if nurses do set a strike date, they will provide the hospital with a 10-day notice to ensure patient safety and continuity of care.
