Following the announcement from Commonwealth Health officials that childbirth services will be phased out at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital July 31st, the union representing registered nurses at the Hospital have now started a petition to try to save the obstetrics services. The action could mean the potential layoffs of more than 30 registered nurses at the facility. The closure at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital would also leave only one labor and delivery department in all of Luzerne County at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Twp.
