The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Wind Advisory for Halloween, urging residents across six Northeast Pennsylvania counties to take precautions against strong western winds.
The advisory, which covers Lackawanna, Luzerne, Susquehanna, Wyoming, Wayne, and Pike Counties, began at 11 a.m. today, Friday, and will remain in effect until 5 a.m. Saturday.
According to the NWS, sustained western winds are expected to reach speeds of 15 to 25 mph, with powerful gusts projected to hit 45 to 50 mph.
Winds at this velocity pose several risks to the public and property, including:
Blowing around unsecured objects (such as holiday decorations and trash cans).
Blowing down tree limbs, which could create hazards on roads and sidewalks.
The NWS strongly advises caution for all drivers, especially those operating high-profile vehicles such as semi-trucks, RVs, buses, and large vans, which are susceptible to being heavily buffeted by crosswinds.
Residents are encouraged to secure all loose outdoor items before the evening's trick-or-treating hours.
