A 76-year-old man died over the weekend following a house fire in Wayne County. Wayne County Coroner Edward Howell identified the victim as Robert W. Craig Sr., who was pronounced dead at his residence on Smoke Signal Path within the Indian Country gated community.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the home at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The coroner’s office was called to the scene about an hour later. An investigation into the death determined that the cause was thermal injuries sustained after Craig became trapped on the second floor of the burning structure.
While Craig was unable to get out, two other occupants of the home managed to escape the fire safely. Fire marshals and local authorities are still investigating the scene to determine what sparked the blaze. No further details regarding the origin of the fire have been released at this time.
