Opening arguments got underway Tuesday in the trial of a man who killed one person and wounded another in a robbery attempt in Scranton last year. Shelton Miles walked into a convenience store along North Main Avenue last March and shot 26-year-old Jose Tatis in the head, then allegedly fired again, striking a clerk in the leg. Tatis died at the hospital. His family says he left behind a 4-year-old daughter and a baby boy on the way. Miles faces first, second, and third-degree murder charges along with other charges related to the armed robbery. Miles’ defense attorney claims his client suffers from a form of dementia due to post-traumatic stress disorder from his time in the U.S. Army, a history of alcoholism, and diabetes. If convicted on any of the murder charges, Miles faces life in prison.
