The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania State Police are issued a stern warning to motorists to reduce their speed in highway work zones following a major enforcement crackdown. Officials gathered at a press conference in Lackawanna County on Friday to share the results of this spring's annual Operation Yellow Jacket campaign, which resulted in more than 1,600 citations and warnings being issued to drivers in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The initiative specifically places state troopers in active construction and maintenance zones, often using PennDOT vehicles, to target reckless behaviors such as speeding and distracted driving.
State police and transportation officials revealed that this year's targeted enforcement effort included 128 separate deployments across the region's highways. The crackdown comes amid ongoing concerns over the safety of highway workers and motorists alike, as speeding in heavily restricted construction areas remains a leading cause of work zone accidents. Authorities emphasized that while the dedicated spring campaign has concluded, troopers will maintain a vigilant presence in construction zones throughout the summer driving season to ensure compliance and protect road crews.
