HARRISBURG, Pa. — Over the weekend, health advocates, state officials, and community organizations across the Commonwealth joined forces for the annual PA Donor Day initiative. Held on Saturday, August 1, the statewide awareness campaign focused on encouraging Pennsylvanians to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors.
Organizers strategically chose the August 1 date—8/1—to highlight a powerful statistic: a single organ donor has the potential to save up to eight lives. Tissue and cornea donations from one individual can also enhance the lives of more than 75 people recovering from injuries, burns, or vision loss.
The push comes at a critical time for healthcare providers across the state. More than 6,000 Pennsylvanians are currently on the waiting list for a life-saving organ transplant, joining a national waitlist that exceeds 100,000 individuals. Officials note that while support for organ donation remains high, fewer than half of eligible Pennsylvanians are officially registered.
State leaders and health officials stressed that donor status is open to everyone, regardless of age or medical history. Registration is free, legal, and takes less than a minute to complete.
How to Sign Up Today
For those who missed the weekend events, enrolling as a donor in Pennsylvania is a simple process that can be done at any time:
- Online: You can register in roughly 30 seconds by visiting DonateLifePA.org or pa.gov. You will need your full name, date of birth, driver’s license or state ID number, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. Registering online automatically updates your record with the Department of Transportation without requiring a new physical card.
- At PennDOT Centers: Residents can check "Yes" to organ donation when applying for or renewing a driver’s license, learner’s permit, or photo ID at any local PennDOT Photo License Center. A red heart emblem will be added to your license.
- By Mail or App: Individuals can also update their donor preferences through PennDOT’s online license renewal portal or designate their decision through the Health app on compatible smartphones.
Advocates remind new registrants that along with signing up online or through PennDOT, it is equally important to inform family members and loved ones of your decision.
