The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has launched a public interactive map designed to track proposed data center projects and their environmental permitting status across the Commonwealth. The online tool, known as the Data Center Permit Tracker, displays project locations alongside real-time updates on required environmental permits. State officials introduced the tracker to provide community transparency as local opposition and environmental concerns over data center expansion continue to grow.

The development of data centers has turned into a major political issue in Pennsylvania, taking center stage during the recent debate between Governor Josh Shapiro and State Treasurer Stacy Garrity. Addressing public concerns during the event, Shapiro emphasized that he drafted what he called the "strictest guardrails in the nation" to regulate data center buildouts. He stated that future approvals must protect local air and water quality while delivering direct, tangible benefits to surrounding communities before state permits are considered.
