The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has officially launched a long-term pavement replacement and restoration project covering critical sections of Interstates 81 and 84 in Lackawanna County. Preliminary work commenced today with tree trimming operations in Scranton and Dunmore, marking the first phase of an extensive infrastructure effort. The project is designed to replace deteriorated concrete pavement with new asphalt to improve the travel surface for thousands of daily motorists.
The scope of the work includes roughly two miles of Interstate 81 in both directions between the Scranton Expressway and the Drinker Street interchange. Additionally, crews will address approximately two miles of the Interstate 84 and Interstate 380 corridor between Route 435 and the Interstate 81 and Casey Highway interchange. This restoration is intended to address long-standing issues with road surface durability in the region.
Major construction activity is scheduled to begin on April 1, marking the start of a multi-year timeline that is expected to continue through 2031. Drivers should prepare for shifting traffic patterns and potential delays as the project progresses over the next several years. PennDOT officials have indicated that this investment is essential for the long-term safety and stability of the regional highway system.
