WILKES-BARRE TWP., PA — In a major blow to last-minute holiday shoppers, the Wyoming Valley Mall is closed today, December 24, due to a sudden power outage.
The closure comes on Christmas Eve, typically one of the highest-traffic shopping days of the year. Retailers and shoppers arriving this morning were met with locked doors and darkened storefronts.
This isn't the first time infrastructure issues have plagued the facility this year. This past summer, the mall was forced to shut down for nearly two weeks starting in late June after underground transmission lines were damaged, leaving dozens of businesses without power and causing significant financial strain on local vendors.
Mall management has not yet specified the cause of today's outage or provided a timeline for restoration. Shoppers are being advised to check the mall's official social media pages for real-time updates regarding whether the building will be able to reopen before the holiday.
