MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — A joint enforcement effort between the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and the Pennsylvania State Police has successfully collected tens of thousands of dollars in overdue tolls following a targeted crackdown on toll evaders.
The agencies launched their first-ever coordinated toll enforcement campaign in April, specifically focusing on aggressive drivers and motorists operating vehicles with suspended registrations due to unpaid tolls. Under state law, Pennsylvania can suspend a vehicle's registration if the owner accumulates $250 or more in unpaid tolls and outstanding invoices.
During the monthlong initiative, state troopers conducted more than 200 targeted traffic stops. Officials highlighted a single, record-setting day during the campaign that resulted in 23 stops.
The sweep yielded highly successful compliance rates, with more than 90% of the stopped motorists either paying their outstanding balances on the spot or taking immediate steps to resolve their accounts with the Turnpike Commission.
On that single record-setting day alone, officials collected more than $48,000 in overdue tolls. The Turnpike Commission expects to ultimately recover more than $130,000 in past-due balances from the motorists stopped during that 24-hour period. State officials indicate that more coordinated enforcement sweeps are planned in the future.
