SCRANTON, PA — Emergency crews responded to a rapidly spreading blaze in Scranton on Thursday morning that damaged two townhomes and left several residents displaced from their homes.
Firefighters were dispatched around 10:00 a.m. to the 500 block of South Keyser Avenue following initial reports of heavy smoke billowing from the garage of a townhome unit. Before emergency personnel arrived on scene, alert neighbors noticed the emerging smoke and began knocking on doors to evacuate occupants from the multi-unit structure.
According to fire officials, the flames quickly traveled from the garage up to the second floor of the building before spreading into an adjacent adjoining residence next door.
No injuries were reported among residents or responding firefighters.
The American Red Cross was called to the scene to provide emergency shelter, clothing, and recovery assistance to the displaced families. The precise cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Scranton Fire Department and Lackawanna County fire investigators.
