A Hazleton man who fled the scene after his pickup struck and killed a teenage bicyclist was sentenced to serve up to two years in the Luzerne County Prison. 38-year old Gabriel Hernandez Mendez pleaded guilty in March to a vehicular homicide charge in exchange for prosecutors dropping counts of fleeing the scene of the crash and failing to stop and render aid. Mendez was the driver of a truck that hit and critically injured 15-year-old Hector Padilla on South Poplar Street in Hazleton in June of last year.
