PA Skill Game Advocates Urge Protection from High Taxes

What appears to be a Pennsylvania Skill Game is shown in an old VFW style bar setting. The game is called "Pirate Kitty" and features other pirate references throughout including "Catpain Hook" and a classic skull and crossbones pirate logo, but with the skull of a feline.

Should Pennsylvania Skill games be taxed or not? The fight continues.

DUPONT, PA — A coalition of bar owners, VFW leaders, skill game suppliers, and state representatives gathered at the Dupont VFW to press Pennsylvania lawmakers to protect skill games, arguing the machines provide critical revenue that keeps small businesses and veterans organizations afloat.

The meeting focused on building support for Senate Bill 1079 and House Bill 2213, proposals that would establish a $500 monthly terminal fee and state oversight. Opponents of Governor Josh Shapiro’s proposed 52% tax rate argue that treating skill games like casino slot machines would force small establishments across the Commonwealth to cut staff or close.

Lawmakers face mounting pressure to act following a Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling that placed the machines under broader gambling oversight, setting up an October legislative deadline.
