Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice David Wecht announced Monday that he is leaving the Democratic Party, citing what he describes as a rise in antisemitism within mainstream party leadership. Wecht, who was first elected to the state’s highest court as a Democrat in 2015, released a statement explaining his decision to switch his affiliation to independent. He pointed to an "acquiescence to Jew-hatred" that he believes has become "disturbingly common among activists, leaders and even many elected officials" within the party.
Despite the move, Wecht’s party change is expected to have a minimal impact on the court's overall balance of power. Following his departure from the party, four Democratic justices still occupy the seven-seat bench. Wecht is currently serving his second term on the court after winning a 10-year retention election last November, ensuring his seat remains secure regardless of his party affiliation.
