Tragic death of 5-year-old boy sparks push for "Purple Alert" system

The death of a five-year-old Monroe County boy has reignited a legislative push to create a specialized alert system for missing children with cognitive disabilities. Ajani Jermaine Samuels, who had autism, was non-verbal, and lived with epilepsy, was found deceased in a body of water on Saturday following an extensive search by the Pennsylvania State Police. The tragedy has prompted advocates and lawmakers to call for the immediate implementation of a "Purple Alert" system, designed to provide rapid public notification when individuals with special needs go missing.

The proposed system would function similarly to an Amber Alert but is tailored specifically for those with cognitive conditions or developmental disabilities. Proponents argue that faster notification is critical for this population, as individuals with autism are often drawn to water or other hazardous environments, making the first hours of a search especially vital. A bill to establish the Purple Alert has already cleared the Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee and is currently awaiting a full floor vote in the House of Representatives
