SOUTH MIDDLETON TWP., Pa. — A fatal collision between a small plane and a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter left one person dead and two state troopers injured at Carlisle Airport on Wednesday evening.

According to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports and statements from Pennsylvania State Police Acting Commissioner Lt. Col. George Bivens, a Bell 407 helicopter assigned to the police aviation unit was hovering near the ground during a training exercise when a landing Cessna 150 veered into the chopper.


The pilot of the Cessna was pronounced dead at the scene. Both state troopers aboard the helicopter survived after Cpl. Bryce Corman pushed out an aircraft window to help fellow trooper Jason Mills escape the wreckage. Both troopers were airlifted to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center for treatment.

Governor Josh Shapiro visited the injured officers at the hospital, confirming both are in stable condition. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash
