Wilkes-Barre’s Zoning Board has approved a plan to convert a longtime commercial building on South Main Street into a large indoor self-storage facility.
CAE Self-Storage LLC was granted a zoning variance to repurpose the four-story, 90,000-square-foot building at 454 South Main Street into a self-storage center with between 600 and 650 units. The board also approved a second variance to waive 29 required parking spaces for the new use.
Built in 1916, the historic structure was home to PSC for more than five decades. The proposed adaptive reuse is part of a growing trend of converting older commercial buildings into modern storage spaces.
The approval clears the way for CAE Self-Storage to move forward with the project, which officials say will help put an underused property back into productive use while preserving the building's structure and character.
