SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA – A devastating head-on collision on I-81 North in Lackawanna County early Sunday morning left three people with serious injuries.
According to reports, the crash occurred around 12 a.m. Sunday near mile marker 193 in South Abington Township. The accident was triggered when one vehicle was traveling the wrong way on the northbound lanes of I-81 and collided head-on with another vehicle.
Following the initial impact:
The wrong-way vehicle struck the guardrail and came to rest on the shoulder of the northbound lane.
The second vehicle also struck the guardrail, with its engine catching fire.
The two drivers and one passenger involved in the crash were all seriously injured. Authorities have confirmed that the crash is currently being investigated as a possible DUI (Driving Under the Influence) incident.
