A 63-year-old Wyoming County woman is facing felony animal cruelty charges after state police say she failed to provide necessary medical care for an injured animal on her property. Dawn Risley, of Mehoopany, was charged following an investigation into the welfare of a cow under her care.
According to state police, the cow had a significant and visible injury to one of its eyes that had been left untreated. Authorities intervened and transported the animal to a veterinarian for emergency treatment. However, due to the severity of the injury and the animal's overall poor health, the veterinarian determined that the most humane course of action was to euthanize the cow.
Risley has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, which is a felony, as well as a misdemeanor count of neglect of animals. She was processed and released pending her next court appearance. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for March 17 at 10 a.m. before District Judge David Plummer.
