Next month, grabbing a meal or snack at McDonald’s could come with the possibility of winning $1 million or other prizes when MONOPOLY at McDonald’s returns.
According to McDonald’s the game – based on the classic board game – begins on Oct. 6 and “it’s even easier to play” than it was before. It explained that this year’s game pieces will be revealed through “all physical peels, letting fans immerse themselves in the classic thrill of the peel, and a stacked prize list.”
In addition to that $1 million cash prize, other prizes include travel experiences like a Carnival Cruise Vacation, a $50,000 college debt paydown, McDonald’s for a year or a 2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Once players peel their pieces (located on McDonald’s items like cups and French fry sleeves), they can scan them in the McDonald’s app to redeem.
Favorites like the Quarter Pounder with Cheese, Egg McMuffin and large fries are included in the list of eligible items, and there are multiple types of prize opportunities, from instant wins to collect to win and “chance” opportunities. Rules and the list of items is available here.
“MONOPOLY at McDonald’s is more than just a game. It’s about childhood memories, family moments and surprises that make our day,” said Alyssa Buetikofer, senior vice president, chief marketing and customer experience officer of McDonald’s USA. “This year, we’re giving fans even more reasons to play with bigger prizes, more rewards, and a simpler digital game experience that includes the classic peel.”
There was previously some trouble with the McDonald’s MONOPOLY game at the turn of the millennium, as CNBC explained in 2020. Jerry P. Jacobson – a former police officer who was one of the security directors at Simon Marketing, the firm used to make sure the game was secure at the time – managed to pull off a multi-million-dollar scam that involved making sure his acquaintances got winning pieces and paid him a portion of the winnings.
It resulted in arrests, McDonald’s firing Simon Marketing, McDonald’s and Simon Marketing suing each other, the HBO documentary “McMillions” and even some interest in a film from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. After around a decade on hiatus, the MONOPOLY for McDonald’s game returned last year.
