The Giants, one of five NFL teams without a victory this season (they share a home field with the Jets, who are also winless), have lost their last two games in heartbreaking fashion, falling to Washington on a last-second field goal in Week 2 (the result of a suspect offsides call on Dexter Lawrence) before enduring a similar fate Sunday against Atlanta. The G-Men haven’t had much to cheer about in that span, ranking among the league’s worst offenses while losing to an anemic Falcons team that was outscored 80-31 in its first two games.

Coming off an injury-plagued summer that deprived Kenny Golladay, Saquon Barkley and Kadarius Toney of precious preseason reps, New York’s rust should come as little surprise, though that doesn’t make the Giants’ late-game failures (they’ve squandered fourth-quarter leads each of the past two weeks) any less maddening. Unfortunately, it won’t get any easier for the Giants, who, according to ESPN’s Mike Clay, face the league’s toughest remaining schedule with upcoming games against the undefeated Rams, reigning Super Bowl Champion Buccaneers and high-powered Chiefs, with the latter two matchups both occurring away from the relative safety of MetLife Stadium.

That gauntlet also includes a trip to Los Angeles to face the Chargers (coming off a decisive road win at Kansas City) as well as showdowns with the Raiders and Panthers, neither of whom have lost this season. Even this week’s game in New Orleans against a stingy Saints defense (only the Panthers and Broncos have allowed fewer points) looks daunting.

It’s much too early to consider this season a lost cause—New York still has 14 games to prove itself. But if the lightbulb doesn’t go on soon, the Giants could be looking at a fifth straight losing season and their second in a row under Joe Judge, who may very well be coaching for his job.
