Kyler Murray’s press release is already a meme

Those familiar with the plot of Jerry Maguire surely remember Cardinals receiver Rod Tidwell (portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr.) urging his agent (Tom Cruise) to “show me the money.” Kyler Murray, also of the Cardinals, echoed that sentiment in a statement released through his agent Erik Burkhardt, reminding Arizona’s front office the ball is still in their court. “Actions speak much louder than words in this volatile business,” wrote Burkhardt. “It is now simply up to the Cardinals to decide if they prioritize their rapidly improving 24-year-old.”

Murray’s desire for a new contract would seem to be the impetus behind his cryptic social media posts, scrubbing his Instagram to remove any mention of the team that drafted him first overall in 2019. The 5’10” quarterback is eligible for an extension and, judging by the longwinded list of demands put out by his agent, Murray has no intention of taking a hometown discount.

Disgruntled superstars are a dime a dozen in today’s age of player empowerment, with similar drama surrounding fellow quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson. Who knows how this particular soap opera ends, but while it gets sorted out, Murray will continue to be the butt of jokes. It didn’t take long for the internet to give Murray the meme treatment, with the fine folks at Twitter churning out parodies and punchlines galore. Come one, come all, to the Kyler Murray Comedy Hour!

Social media didn’t seem to take Murray’s threat too seriously, skewering the Pro Bowler’s sternly-worded dossier like the dais at a Friars Club Roast. We’ll see if the tension brewing between Murray and the Cardinals (coming off their first playoff appearance in six years) dissipates once offseason workouts get underway.
