Penguins battle back in Toronto, take Game 3 of Eastern Conference Final

Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins breathed new life into their postseason run on Monday night, capturing their first win of the Eastern Conference Final with a gritty 5-3 victory over the Toronto Marlies at the Coca-Cola Coliseum. Although the Penguins still trail 2-1 in the best-of-seven series, a stellar third-period surge and a dominant performance from their youth movement proved they are far from finished. Goaltender Sergei Murashov anchored the victory with a spectacular 36-save performance, while the dynamic line of Aidan McDonough, Bill Zonnon, and Atley Calvert ignited the offense, with each player finding the back of the net in multi-point outings.

The clubs traded blows through the first two periods, with Vinni Lettieri opening the scoring for Toronto before McDonough answered on the power play. Zonnon briefly gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead in the second frame, but a bizarre bounce off a skate allowed Toronto's Luke Haymes to tie it before the intermission. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton seized control in the third period during a four-on-four stretch, as Ville Koivunen finished a beautiful passing sequence from Tristan Broz. Minutes later, Calvert converted a perfect backdoor feed from McDonough to make it 4-2. Toronto added a late extra-attacker goal, but Tanner Howe iced the game with an empty-netter to secure the win.

The high-stakes battle continues tomorrow night, Wednesday, June 3, for Game 4 in Toronto. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and local fans can follow the action live on WILK Newsradio at 103.1 FM, 910 AM in Scranton, 980 AM in Wilkes-Barre, or stream the broadcast through the free Audacy app.
