EVANSTON, IL — The Penn State Nittany Lions (3-1) hit the road Friday night to face the Northwestern Wildcats (2-1) in a high-stakes Big Ten matchup marking the grand opening of the newly constructed Ryan Field.
Penn State is seeking a crucial rebound following a tough 24-20 loss to Wisconsin last week. The Nittany Lions enter as slight road favorites, led by a stout defense that ranks among the best in the nation. Penn State boasts the country's top third-down defense, allowing opponents to convert on just 18.5% of attempts, alongside a pass defense permitting only 126.3 yards per game.
However, Penn State’s defense will face a stiff challenge in the red zone. Northwestern features the nation's top-ranked red zone offense, converting 100% of its scoring opportunities inside the 20-yard line behind transfer quarterback Aidan Chiles, who has thrown for 807 yards and six touchdowns without an interception this season.
Offensively, Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht and running back James Peoples will aim to capitalize on Northwestern's defensive vulnerabilities. The Wildcats have struggled against the run, allowing nearly 200 rushing yards per game.
