Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola matched a Major League Baseball record Friday afternoon, striking out 10 straight New York Mets batters in the first game of a doubleheader.
It's ironic that Nola did this against the Mets because in striking out 10 consecutive batters, he tied franchise icon Tom Seaver's record, which happened in April of 1970:
Nola, a former All-Star, nearly struck out 11 straight, but Pete Alonso poked a 1-2 pitch into right field for a double. Still, Nola rallied to strand Alonso, and finished the fourth inning with his 11th strikeout of the day.
After doubling off the wall in his first at-bat of the day, Nola got the Phillies on the board in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI double:
Fans at Citi Field will be spoiled with some of the pitching they get to see this weekend. Two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom - who will enter the day with a 0.50 ERA - is slated to start Saturday for the Mets. Sunday, former Met Zack Wheeler will get the ball for the Phillies, likely weeks away from making his first All-Star Game appearance.
