Today Marks 43rd Anniversary of the 1978 Blizzard

5,000 Ohio National Guard members were called for rescue.

It has been 43 years since the deadly blizzard of 1978. The storm started in Indiana on January 25th, 1978. The storm made its way to Ohio by the next day. By the storm's end, 51 people had died.

The Turnpike was shut down, cars and houses were buried, and temperatures in the Cleveland area PLUMMETED by almost 40 degrees in six hours. Though the actual snow dumped on the area wasn't a lot, the winds were so strong that it caused the snow drifts to do all that damage and burying. Remember, a blizzard is not defined by the snowfall- a blizzard defined by the strength of the winds (as well as visibility and length of the storm).

Luckily for us, we won't be getting hit with another blizzard like that on the anniversary. Instead we'll get some snow and some ice. While those are still dangerous conditions, we won't have snowdrifts taller than semi trucks. You can check out some of the pictures from the blizzard here.
