Crews are now demolishing part of the Avon Lake Power Plant. The process started early Wednesday morning.

According to officials, two boilers in one of the buildings at the old plant on Lake Road imploded with controlled explosives. The scheduled event took place shortly after 5:30 a.m.

The Ohio Department of Transportation said U.S. Route 6 (Lake Road) is scheduled to be closed between Miller and Moore roads from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.

The power plant, built in 1926 by Cleveland Electric Illuminating, was the largest of its kind at the time, according to Cleveland Historical records.
