CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Browns will likely be without one of their most reliable players and leaders for a bit.
An MRI Monday confirmed that receiver Jarvis Landry suffered a sprained MCL head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed.
“He is week-to-week,” Stefanski said.
The injury, which ended the 5-time Pro Bowler’s streak of consecutive games with at least two receptions at 111, the fourth longest in NFL history, occurred on the second play of Sunday’s 31-21 win over the Texans when Landry was tackled following a 9-yard completion.
Stefanski was unable to say if the Browns will place Landry on injured reserve or what his availability for this week against Chicago will be.
“We will see,” Stefanski said. “We will work through all of those type of decisions over the next few days.”
Landry, who has 642 career catches for 7,108 yards and 35 touchdowns, has missed just one game in his eight year career, that was last year due to COVID-19 protocols.
“He is attacking his rehab as you can imagine,” Stefanski said. “Nobody likes to be injured, but going back to the statement I just made about Jed, these guys are going to fight their rear ends off to get back and battle and compete with their teammates. I think Jarvis will be another example of that.”
The loss of Landry for any amount of time is immeasurable.
“We lose a big time leader, the mentality and a playmaker,” running back Kareem Hunt said. “I can’t wait for him to get healthy and get back out there.”
Stefanski indicated that he had not spoken to quarterback Baker Mayfield before speaking with reporters Monday, but the quarterback appears to be okay after having his left shoulder pop out and back in when he tried to tackle Texans safety Jordan Reid following an interception.
“He’s doing fine. He’s sore,” Stefanski said.
Mayfield went to the locker room briefly but did not miss a snap. He completed his final 10 passes of the afternoon following the injury.
“Honestly, I was nervous. I told him, ‘Let me tackle him next time,’ Hunt said. “It was definitely a shocker. I wanted to help him off of the field. It would have been a big moment. Case [Keenum] was getting ready, and he is a great quarterback, too. It would have been another tough loss if that would have happened, but I am surprised he came back really quickly and I am glad.”
Linebacker Sione Takitaki is also “week-to-week” with a hamstring injury.
Left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr., who tried to play on an ankle injury suffered Week 1 at Kansas City, will be okay according to Stefanski.
“He’s no worse for the wear,” Stefanski said. “I am really proud of him for how he responded, wanted to go out there and competed. He got stiff, and I thought it was the right thing to do to take him out. That is a big deal, and I think his teammates recognize that is a big deal when you fight to make it to Sunday.”
