The Department of Justice took the next step in its plan to reclassify marijuana yesterday.
The DOJ submitted the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to the Office of the Federal Register and has a 60-day public comment period before it moves forward.
Marijuana has been classified as a Schedule I drug since the Controlled Substances Act was passed in 1971, putting it in the same category as heroin and meth.
The proposed rescheduling would move cannabis to the list of Schedule III drugs, which are defined as drugs “with a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence.”
