'Morning Quickie': 97th Academy Awards recap

What's trending to start your day

The Oscars were last night! Conan O’Brien hosted for the first time. The night was filled with big moments and big wins. We break it all down here.

Let’s dive into the big wins first:

“Anora” won the award for Best Picture last night. In fact, the movie walked away with a bunch of awards! Sean Baker won Best Director, and Mikey Madison won Best Actress in a Leading Role for the film as well. It also won Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing. Sean Baker also became the second person to win four Oscars in one year, tying Walt Disney. He is the first person, however, to win four Oscars for the same film.

Now let’s dive into some of the big moments from the night:

Conan’s monologue was filled to the brim with jokes and bits including:
“Little fact for you…‘Anora’ uses the F-word 479 times…That’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist,” Conan started, then pretending to be Gascon’s publicist, yelled “You tweeted WHAT??!”
He followed up “Karla, if you’re going to tweet about the Oscars, remember, my name is Jimmy Kimmel.” The Oscars host also did a long bit with Adam Sandler, calling him out for not dressing up for the big night. After a bit of arguing Sandler decided to just leave…but not before running up to Timothée Chalamet and once again yelling out “Chalamet!”

Also, Gene Hackman got a standalone in memoriam segment. Morgan Freeman came on stage to honor his friend, sharing “This week our community lost a giant…And I lost a dear friend.”
