"Wicked” ruled the North American box office this weekend! The movie musical took in $114-million in its debut weekend. The movie also broke a ton of records in its debut. It became the biggest opening for a movie based on a broadway show in North America with $114-million, as well as with the best global opening, with a take of $164.2-million around the world.
It’s the biggest opening for Cythnia Erivo ever. It's also the biggest opening for Ariana Grande ever...and the biggest domestic movie opening for a pop star as well.
The other big movie that came out this weekend, “Gladiator II,” took second place with a solid $55.5-million in its debut. Christmas action movie “Red One” placed third this weekend with a haul of $13.3-million.
Another new movie, “Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin,” took fourth place with $5.1-million. Finally, “Venom: The Last Dance” stuck around in the top five, taking fifth place with $4-million this weekend.
