The opening round of the men's NCAA basketball tournament got underway on Thursday, and it did not disappoint. Although local favorite Akron lost to Creighton 77-60, Dayton had a huge comeback as the Flyers defeated Nevada 63-60. However, there were still some surprising results. 11 seed Duquesne upset 6 seed BYU 71-67, another 11 over a 6 saw Oregon topple South Carolina 87-73. And, in another 11-6 matchup, NC State toppled Texas Tech 80-67.
But, the most surprising game of the night was in Pittsburgh where 14th seeded Oakland (not in California, but Michigan) was taking on 3 seed Kentucky. The Golden Grizzlies had their signature moment, defeating the Wildcats 80-76. The story of the game was Jack Gohlke for the Grizzlies, as he made ten 3-pointers on his way to 32 points. Oakland will play NC State next in the round of 32.
