Greta Van Fleet made their glorious return when they dropped their sophomore album The Battle at Garden’s Gate. The record follows their epic 2018 debut Anthem of the Peaceful Army, which helped propel the band to international acclaim and gave them four GRAMMY nominations.
The album has been in the works for quite some time and the COVID-19 pandemic didn’t help, but it also allowed Greta Van Fleet the opportunity to place their attention solely on the album.
“Given the current situation, we’re able to get our hands on these things more directly,” singer Josh Kiszka told Audacy in a previous interview. “In the past you’d been so busy with touring, trying to fit in recording inside of that, and trying to have some space to breathe.”
“The album is a bit of an amalgamation of older songs and completely fresh new songs,” he added. “We started recording summer of 2019 fitting in recording around touring, which was totally normal for us. Then all of a sudden, we had most of the album done and we come into this pandemic phase and then it was actually a matter of getting to record the last two tracks somehow within this scenario.”
The Battle at Garden’s Gate comes in at 12 total tracks and sees an evolution of the Greta Van Fleet sound.
The record incorporates tinges of world music, psychedelia, and prog rock all while expanding on the rock sound that made fans fall in love with the band in the first place.
There’s another theme at play with Greta Van Fleet’s album, hope. “What’s coming next is something that’s much more in the realm of hope,” bassist Sam Kiszka said. “I think it’s something we can all relate to and something we all need right now.”
