Detroit Public Television is celebrating the life and legacy of radio legend Dick Purtan in a two-hour "Detroit Remember When" special.

The documentary includes an in- depth look at Purtan's extraordinary radio career and philanthropy. It highlights his life on and off the air and is told through audio and video clips, archival film and interviews with Purtan, his family, friends and colleagues, including "Purtan's People" cast members.

"I am so proud of my dad's incredible career and his commitment to giving back to the city he loves so much," said daughter JoAnne Purtan, who hosts "The JJ & JoAnne show" each morning on WOMC, the same station where Dick ended his iconic career. "My family and I can't wait to see the finished product. We can't thank Detroit Public Television enough for giving us this gift."

The 60-minute documentary film airs Thursday September 15 at 9 p.m. and features some of the most memorable moments from Purtan's top-rated morning show, including his storied "Put-on Calls" and character bits he was known for.

JJ & JoAnne talked with "Big Al", a staple of Purtan's show, about the documentary.
