Join us all February as we honor trailblazers of the past and present.

WPGC is celebrating Black History Month with a tribute to men and women who have shifted the status quo and strive to make black history every day.

We're highlighting today's generation and individuals from our communities that are making history and bringing us closer to a more perfect union.

Check out some of the people we will be featuring and be sure to listen to WPGC 95.5 all month!

----

Tarana Burke - A civil rights activist who was the original founder of the "Me Too" movement, which she started in 2006, Burke created a global phenomenon that raised awareness about sexual harassment, abuse, and assault in society.

Jonathan Lykes -  A policy analyst who works as a Black Youth Project 100 D.C. coordinating council member. BYP 100 is a collective of Black activists working toward expanding civil rights. He often tweets about the role of policy in affecting social change.

George A. Jones - Chief Executive Officer of Bread for the City (BFC) since January 2, 1996, Jones is responsible for managing all administrative, financial, and programmatic aspects of the organization and its 100 full-time staff.

Melinda Anderson- An educator and a contributing writer for The Atlantic, Anderson writes articles that discuss the effects of racial injustice, specifically in education.

Here’s a fun #Blackhistory fact:

Black H.S. students from Oakland are responsible for #MLKDay becoming a state holiday in California! They embarked on campaign in their freshman year in 1978. Cali’s first MLK Day was celebrated in 1982—before it became nat’l holiday in 1986! ✊🏾

Van Jones- Jones is a  U.S. media personality and the founder of multiple social enterprises. He is truly a world-class change maker.

Ava DuVernay-  DuVernay makes art that looks squarely at society and takes it to task. She is fearless, despite working in an industry that hasn’t seen many black women who direct, write or maintain career longevity. She began as a publicist, and over the years developed a voice and vision that flowered into films, documentaries and television that effortlessly combined art and activism across forms.

Ta-Nehisi Coates - A national correspondent for The Atlantic and the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller "Between the World and Me," Coates pushes boundaries and even testified before congress, making a case for reparations.

Don Lemon - He serves as a correspondent across CNN/U.S. programming. Based out of the network's New York bureau, Lemon joined CNN in September 2006 and he is the current face of CNN Tonight with Don Lemon airing weeknights at 10 p.m.

Trevor Noah-  Noah is the most successful comedian in Africa and is the host of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central. This year "The Daily Show" has been nominated for three Emmys, including Outstanding Variety Talk Series.

Brittany K. Barnett and MiAngel Cody- While Kim Kardashian receives all the praise for her work with the criminal justice system and the freeing of inmates, attorneys Brittany K. Barnett and MiAngel Cody, are doing all the hard work behind-the-scenes to free non-violent offenders who are serving lengthy prison sentences.
