The Weeknd, who goes by his full name Abel Tesfaye for this project, teamed up with Euphoria writer Sam Levinson to create a Popstar gone wrong story. Starring Lily-Rose Depp as singer Jocelyn, the series will follow her as she falls into the wrong crowd of drugs, drinking and the seedy side of Hollywood. Not only is his single “Double Fantasy,” Tesfaye is now doing double-duty as a musician and actor. He plays a notorious producer and club owner who manipulates the tortured artist as they develop a toxic relationship together.

The series has already had its fair share of backlash given the content, and that Rolling Stone revealed "rewrites" that some viewers and internal sources found disturbing.

After first performing the song live at Coachella with Metro Bloom, it is now available everywhere with the original rapper, Future. The single itself is a mix of lo-fi pop and R&B in the classic The Weeknd style, so it’s sure to be a hit with fans regardless of the soundtrack. To reflect the series, Lily-Rose Depp stars in the music video as well, which The Weeknd also directed. “Sam is, for so many reasons, the best director I have ever worked with,” Depp said in a press statement. “Never have I felt more supported or respected in a creative space, my input, and opinions more valued.”

The Idol TV series will first premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May before releasing on HBO Max on Sunday, June 4 at 9PM ET. In the meantime, the single and music video surely act as their own teasers.
