With just under two months before the start of spring football in south Florida, the list of coaching vacancies narrowed by one on Thursday.
Only Coconut Creek and Boyd Anderson remain without a head football coach thanks to the hiring of former NFL running back and Florida product Leonard Weaver at Coral Springs.
Weaver joins fellow former NFL standout Patrick Burnett, who was named recently at McArthur, to jump into high school football in one of the most competitive areas in the nation.
While Coral Springs has not been relevant for many years, Athletic Director Brandon Wesley is hoping the Colts can make some noise and start bringing in players who will stay around.
Wesley, who was at Boyd Anderson, and for the past year at Coral Springs, fully understands the landscape of high school football – and believes with the hire of the former Satellite High, Carson Newman and Philadelphia Eagles' running back, things can start to change in Northwest Broward County.
"Everyone knows how things work across south Florida," Wesley said. "Nobody will kid themselves believing that things don't happen, but we feel confident on what Leonard Weaver brings to this program. He is not only someone who has played the game, but knows how to teach and build a foundation."
While the Colts have been stuck in neutral through the years, someone like Weaver has the knowledge to help this program grow and keep the players home by teaching them and helping them get to the next level.
Back in January, he had the opportunity to coach in the Tropical Bowl. He has also been a broadcaster – as well being an NFL All-Pro player. He was an undrafted free agent who was signed by Seattle – and then went on to play with the Eagles.
Weaver, who replaces Terrence Butler, joins Rocco Casullo (Cypress Bay), Cedric Aleander (Piper), Josh Shapiro's return to South Broward and West Broward's Brian McCartney.as off season Broward County hires.
