This past week "Radio Row" at the Miami Beach Convention Center was loaded with radio and TV stations from across the country, broadcasting from the sight of the Super Bowl.
For every Fox and ESPN national outlet that took center stage, there were local media outlets – such as our own 560 The Joe – WQAM and 790 The Ticket – WAXY. Among those giants of this industry was broadcasting veteran Larry "The Amigo" Milian and his SLAM Radio, a 24 hour a day station on SiriusXM - Channel 145.
Milian is part of the Sports Leadership and Management (SLAM), a public charter school in Miami for 6th through 12th grade students seeking careers in the Sports Leadership and Management industries.
Milian brings his radio expertise and mentoring abilities into the classroom, serving as the National General Manager and Program Director for SLAM Radio, a first-of-its-kind SiriusXM sports and talk radio station, run by high school students from SLAM Charter Schools.
Located (542 NW 12th Ave) in one of the city's most impoverished neighborhoods, SLAM opened its doors in 2013. The 7-story state-of-the art school facility features a penthouse gymnasium overlooking Miami's downtown and Marlins Park.
This past week, SLAM received perhaps the biggest boost nationally the school has ever enjoyed when former New England Patriots' tight end Rob Gronkowski, who recognized how impressive this school has been, awarded Milian, his daughter, Amanda, who also hosts several shows and works with the station, and two other on air students, tickets to today's Super Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium as part of Good Morning America on ABC. https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/living/video/deserving-students-mento...
SLAM, which provides students with unique access to career mentors, athletes as role models, and executive internships through educational partnerships with local and national sports franchises, benefits from real world learning experiences within all facets of the sports industry – and for the big game, they will be center stage and representing.
As the director, Milian hosts a daily show, Good Morning Amigo, starting at 7 a.m., and is a,high energy morning sports talk show (https://www.siriusxm.com/slamradio).
