HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) - ESPN's Booger McFarland joined Clint Stoerner and The Show on Wednesday to talk about Cal McNair's decision to form an ad-hoc committee of NFL experts to help hire their next head coach and general manager.
One of the members of the committee includes Super Bowl-winning head coach, Tony Dungy. And if it were up to McFarland, he'd want the Texans to hire the 65-year-old.
"If Tony Dungy said, ‘I want to coach next year,’ and I’m Houston, I’d hire Tony Dungy. Tony Dungy’s not an offensive coach, he’s not a quarterback’s coach, but I guarantee he’d be the best coach the Texans have ever had."
And should Dungy not want to coach, what does he bring to the table in team's search?
"I think it’s the ultimate respect from anyone. I’ve never met someone who not only liked but respected Tony Dungy as a man and his character. But more importantly, he’s a Super Bowl-winning head coach that’s done it multiple ways. Down in Tampa we had a defensively oriented team and won in Tampa. Then he went to Indy and with an offensive-oriented team, he won a Super Bowl. From a football acumen standpoint, he is as good as there is. From a personal judge of character standpoint, he is as good as there is," McFarland said.
And what character traits should Dungy and the other members be looking for in the Texans next head coach?
"The most important thing when choosing a head coach, I think it’s about culture. … I want a guy that can be a guy that can be a culture that’s going to be a winning culture, that’s going to be a culture that guys enjoy coming to work with. I don’t care if you can call a play or not but if you can lead men and you can build a team, I don’t care if you’re a coordinator or not, that’s what Houston needs to bring in. I think Tony Dungy will be a great guy to evaluate the prospective candidates and help Houston get someone like that."
There are currently two head coaching vacancies in the NFL (Texans and Falcons), with more surely to follow as the season comes to an end in early January. But how does the Houston job stack up with Atlanta and some of the others that will likely become available.
"I don’t think it’s the most attractive job there’s going to be available because there’s so much work to do on this defense. Deshaun Watson is the ultimate chest piece. He will probably be the best quarterback on these teams that are looking for a new head coach unless the Chargers do something with Anthony Lynn. I could be talked into choosing Herbert over Watson, based on everything around them," McFarland said.
