NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The U.S. State Department’s website was given a confusing update on Monday, indicating both President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence’s terms were scheduled to end during the day.
While the pages have since been removed, Trump and Pence’s biographies on the official State Department’s website included a line saying their terms “ended on 2021-01-11 19:49:00.”
The change, which lit up social media, was apparently the work of a disgruntled staffer, according to a BuzzFeed report.
Amid the confusion, dozens of social media users immediately began to poke fun at the situation.
Others joked that Trump must be removed if an official government website says so. During the week, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have been calling for the president to be removed via the 25th Amendment for inciting the riots at the U.S. Capitol Building.
On Wednesday, the House will meet Wednesday to consider impeaching Trump for "incitement of insurrection."
Trump and Pence’s terms are set to expire on Jan. 20, when President-elect Joe Biden is sworn into office.
The State Department tells BuzzFeed that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has ordered an internal investigation into the matter.
The department plans to begin the investigation with interns and employees leaving the State Department this week and next, ahead of the transition to the Biden administration.
