Jingle all the way to Lake Compounce and Connecticut’s Tallest Christmas Tree this holiday season. It’s the 10th Anniversary of Holiday Lights at America’s First Amusement Park, Lake Compounce! This season, the park has added more activities including Kyle’s Holiday Dance Party, Stuff-A-Bear, make your own ornaments, and of course meet and greets with Santa. Family favorite rides including Kiddie Coaster, the North Pole Express, Boocifer’s Haunted Holiday at Ghost Hunt, Zoomer’s Gas ‘n Go, and more will be open throughout Holiday Lights. The Hartford Saengerbund presents a traditional Christkindlmarkt (Christmas Market) on Friday and Saturday at its 719 North Mountain Road in Newington. A $2 entry fee is requested and a portion of that money will be donated to the Newington Food Bank.  Enjoy traditional German music, dancing and pageantry including the daily lighting of the Christmas tree, carolers and a visit from St. Nicholas. Vendors will offer imported German and hand-crafted items. Looking for someone else to cook today? These are Thanksgiving Day Dining Specials at Mohegan Sun. Hash House a Go Go will feature a Roasted Turkey Dinner for $26.99 served with cornbread stuffing, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans and cranberry sauce, all topped with turkey gravy. This special competes with another Thanksgiving offering: The Big O’ Turkey Pot Pie ($25.99) served with a rosemary black pepper crust filled with roasted turkey, shaved sweet corn, mushrooms, broccoli, carrots, red potatoes and pan gravy. TAO Asian Bistro & Lounge will have Roasted Duck Dumplings served with Szechuan duck gravy, spiced fig and blackberry chutney as their Thanksgiving Day special. TAO will be open from 4:30pm through 9:00pm on Thanksgiving, and this special is $25. Michael Jordan’s Steak House will serve up a Fig and Onion Bruschetta appetizer for $13 as well as a Butternut Bisque with cranberry fritters for $14. The Thanksgiving entrée will be a Classic Turkey Dinner ($34) with slow-roasted turkey, haricot verts, stuffing, gravy, red bliss mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. There is also a Porchetta entrée available on November 24th, featuring an apple and spinach stuffed pork roast, butternut squash puree, roasted turnips and pork cider jus. A dessert option includes Apple Crisp with maple bourbon ice cream for $14! The MJ23 Sports Bar & Grill will have similar Thanksgiving Day specials, while offering mouthwatering appetizer specials like Broccoli Cheddar Soup and Kale Salad with roasted squash, apples, prosciutto and goat cheese. Jasper White’s Summer Shack will switch it up for guests looking for a non-traditional Thanksgiving Day feast as they will be highlighting their Summer Shack Clambake with 1lb lobster joined by clams, mussels, corn on the cob, potatoes, chorizo and more. Todd English’s Tuscany will offer a Prix Fixe Menu for $48. The first course is a wood-roasted pear and gorgonzola salad with candied walnuts, pomegranate reduction, arugula topped with balsamic vinaigrette. The main course serves a sage-brined turkey with sausage potato stuffing, roasted root veggies, sweet potato with pecan crumble, bacon Dijon Brussels peddles, grappa cranberry sauce and sage turkey gravy. Guests can finish this incredible special off with a Pecan Bread Pudding with vanilla gelato.

Visitors to Gillette Castle State Park can enjoy a generous touch of festive spirit while the eccentric home has temporarily closed its doors for restoration. Stroll the grounds from 8 a.m. until sunset on black Friday and on Saturdays and Sundays between the two major holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. At the Cider Station just off the main path to the Castle, hot cider, cocoa, and snacks will be available for purchase from noon until 4 p.m. on all those days, weather permitting. Visitors also will have a chance to congregate around the warmth of a nearby fire pit. Kids can enjoy a scavenger hunt and creating colored images of the historic castle. Live performances by several regional musicians have been planned including The Flute Loops this Sunday, November 27, The Chameleon Trio December 17 and Mystic Winds December 18. All performances start at 1 p.m.
at the Visitor Center. Volunteers will be leading interpretive hikes along William Gillette’s historic narrow-gauge train trails. Special appearances by “William and Helen Gillette” will begin at 2 p.m. each Sunday afternoon inside the Visitor Center. www.gillettecastlefriends.org

Don’t miss Christmas in Connecticut at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam. A musical comedy based on the classic 1945 Warner Brothers film about a self-proclaimed “Martha Stewart” type that has no idea how to boil an egg!
