The city of Seville, Spain has approximately 48,000 orange trees. Each year, those trees drop thousands of oranges on the city streets, creating a hazard for drivers and pedestrians alike; not to mention the city's sanitation department.
This year the municipal water company has come up with an idea to take 35 tons of the unused fruit and turn it into clean energy to power one of the city's water purification plants.
The hope for the future, if enough energy is produced from these oranges that would otherwise be dumped into landfills, there will be a surplus of electricity to return some back into the power grid.
