WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC) - AAA says call volume has been through the roof because of the frigid conditions of the past few days.

In Greater Hartford alone, the auto club received more than 2,600 calls for help on Monday. Approximately fifty percent of the calls were about dead batteries, with another thirty percent tow requests, according to AAA spokeswoman Amy Parmenter.

Parmenter predicts calls today, on Tuesday, could eclipse yesterday's, with people heading back to work after the holiday weekend.

Garaging your vehicle can help avoid a dead battery, but she says the average battery only lasts three to five years in New England. "We saw a number of batteries that weren't even so old, but weren't able to start vehicles."

She urges all motorists to be prepared if they get stranded, with extra blankets, coats, emergency supplies, and a fully-charged cell phone.
