NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Federal authorities say two brothers who risked workers' health through the illegal removal of asbestos from a property they owned have been ordered to pay fines and perform community service. Thirty-five-year-old Rezart Rakaj and 39-year-old Kliton Rakaj were sentenced Monday in New Haven for offenses related to the illegal removal of asbestos at a New Haven property in 2015. Both were ordered to serve one year of probation, pay a $9,500 fine, and perform 50 hours of community service. Authorities say in November 2015, the brothers and another family member purchased a commercial property. Authorities say despite being told to do so, they opted not to hire a hazardous materials firm and instead paid workers to illegally remove asbestos from the property.
