MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTIC) - A commemoration ceremony will be held later today near the clean energy power plant in Middletown, the site of a deadly explosion nine years ago.
Today marks the anniversary of the blast that killed six workers, when natural gas exploded during a procedure to purge a pipeline at the power plant.
Kyle Zimmer, with Union Local 478 for Operating Engineers in Connecticut, says the blast led to changes in worker safety rules.
"Federal laws have changed, state laws changed," he said. "We strive every day to make work sites safer for everybody."
The annual memorial service will be held near the plant on River Road. Representatives from various agencies, including federal and state OCEA and local police and firefighters, are expected.
