(Hartford, Conn./WTIC) - Several days of sub-freezing and sub-zero temperatures are  likely to bring out winter recreation lovers over the next few days.

That means practicing safety if you plan to head out on a frozen pond or lake.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection advises steering clear of any area where the ices thickness is under four inches.

DEEP spokesman Chris Collibee says you can use an ice chisel or cordless drill to make a hole to determine the thickness.

Also, he advises wearing a life or float jacket, bringing an ice safety kit, and going out with another person.

Collibee says they discourage driving or snow mobiling on ice regardless of the thickness.
