NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A small trash can fire evacuated a residence hall at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven early Tuesday.
The New Haven Fire Department says that the fire at the West Campus Residence Complex, on Wintergreen Avenue, was reported around 2 a.m.
The fire was quickly extinguished. Initial indications are that the fire was started by a discarded cigarette, said school officials.
Three students were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, said the university. Everyone was allowed back into the building by 5 a.m.
Several suites sustained smoke and water damage. Affected students were relocated.
