(Waterbury, Conn./WTIC) - Construction begins this evening on a busy section of Connecticut highway in Waterbury.

The Mixmaster, that collection of bridges and ramps which connects Interstate 84 with Route 8, is undergoing work.

For the next two weeks, crews will be hanging work platforms in the area of exits 19 and 20 on I-84.

John Dunham, a district engineer with the state Department of Transportation, says it's part of a broader project that will take place over the next 3-plus years.

That includes steel, deck, sidewall and surface paving work.

For now, Dunham says the platform work will be done overnights to mitigate impacts on traffic.

Dunham says there will be posted detours for motorists to follow during the period.
